Specialist South African packaged wastewater treatment plant service provider Calcamite was crowned the winner of industrial software company AVEVA’s Sustainable Impact Award 2026.

The announcement was made on May 21, the final day of AVEVA World 2026, held in Milan, Italy.

Calcamite is wholly owned and operated as a subsidiary of JoJo Tanks. Its expertise is in decentralised packaged wastewater treatment systems. It was chosen as the award winner for its work in building decentralised wastewater treatment solutions, enabling the treatment of 4 000 gallons of wastewater a day.

The company emerged victorious over the other two finalists – Enel, which was considered for its work in optimising renewable energy monitoring and industry partners Goodtech and Vianode, whose work is focused on powering low-carbon graphite production.

Calcamite’s efforts in showcasing how decentralised solutions, powered by data, can bridge gaps that allow it to reach communities where there is no infrastructure and provide access at a grassroots level, were lauded at the event.

Representatives for the company welcomed the win, highlighting that small interventions can lead to a big impact collectively.

Meanwhile, AVEVA has announced that it will donate $10 000 to the Word Wildlife Fund Italy, as well as make a donation to plant 5 000 trees which are expected to sequester over 250 000 kg of CO2-equivalent over their lifetime.

Further, Adventurer Bear Grylls was called upon to deliver the closing keynote of the day and the event. He referenced AVEVA CEO Casper Herzberg’s opening remarks on the need for leaders to embed resilience in companies, to navigate a dynamic business environment.

Grylls said building resilience was anchored on three pillars of incorporating failure, managing fear and actioning inner strength.

For the first, he pointed out, failures largely outweigh successes, and therefore, there is a need to embrace and adapt to these, thereby engendering strength.

For the second, he explained that life would test everyone, and how a person responded was what defined them.

“Life rewards the dogged, the determined,” he stressed.

For the third, Grylls indicated that there was a need to use one’s inner “fire” to turn failure and fear into something positive.

He underscored the importance of unwavering resistance.
